Not that this has been stopping it from doing well. Only three days in, Warzone is off to a great start, having attracted millions to its fast-paced 150-player battle royale gameplay. A lot of people are loving what it’s offering, but amid all of the praise so far, many fans are finding one glaring flaw, that being that footsteps are pretty much inaudible.

In a first-person shooter, the ability to hear an opponent coming is key to helping players get around their limited perspective and move around without fear of being constantly snuck up on. That’s why players have taken issue with the fact that enemy footsteps don’t seem to register well in Warzone. Footstep volume was something Modern Warfare also had difficulty with at launch, except in that case players complained that the footsteps were too loud and distracting.
According to Call of Duty news site Charlie Intel, this was also the case for Warzone up until recently. Writing on Twitter, they explained how the footstep audio was too loud at a video capture event where they played the game, but now it appears Infinity Ward has taken things too far in the other direction as a result of initial feedback. That being said, Charlie Intel did state that the developer is “actively adjusting and looking at fixing the footstep audio,” so it sounds like this shouldn’t be an issue for too much longer.
Until then, however, players are going to have to figure out a solution to the problem of Call of Duty: Warzone’s footstep volume on their own. So far, it’s been reported that one can improve the volume through changing up the audio setting they have the game set to (specifically to the one called Boost). It’s not perfect from the sound of it, but it should be better than nothing in the meantime for players eager to have this issue addressed.
Call of Duty: Warzone is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
