Plunder mode is a completely different beast from the standard battle royale of Warzone. Unlike the typical BR match in Warzone, where an ominous cloud of poison gas slowly closes in around players, making the battle area smaller, Plunder has no gas at all. The objective of Plunder is also different. The aim is to collect the most cash, and the game enters its final phase when the first team earns $1,000,000, triggering a final 2-minute cash grab to the finish. The game mode has unlimited respawns, and attracts players who want to explore the Verdansk map or are looking for something that might be a little less high tension.

The Plunder playlist offers a very different experience in Warzone, which is why its removal is causing some backlash in the fan community. Players on Reddit bemoan that the loss of Plunder means they’ve lost the one mode they actually liked in Warzone. Fans point to it being the only game mode that feels different from the battle royale template, and those that play it emphatically call it the most fun mode in Warzone. The development team behind Call of Duty continues to shake up the playlists to see what players gravitate to, and what they reject. It keeps the game fresh, but when a fan favorite is removed, it causes some outcries from the community.
Season 4 is still young, and this weekend Call of Duty: Warzone is offering crossover with Modern Warfare. Players can drop into MW multiplayer and give that a go. Some Plunder fans in the comment threads are optimistic that after this weekend of Modern Warfare crossover, Plunder will return. The road map for Season 4 gives players an idea of what is to come, but tweaks can be made along the way. When fan response gets loud enough, game modes might be reinstated or dropped based on that response.
Every change that is made to Call of Duty: Warzone is an attempt by developer Infinity Ward to either refine the formula or add something unique to make the game stand out. Not everything is going to be well received. One of Season 4’s new additions, the Jailbreak, is in that trial phase. Will fans take to it, or reject it? It remains to be seen. But opinions on Plunder’s removal seem more clear and indicate that fans want it back.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
