Since launch, Call of Duty: Warzone players have waged war against one another in the city of Verdansk. This titular warzone has been the cite of countless battles among players, and big changes to it are coming soon. First it was the infiltration of zombies to the map, and now this strange radiation. Many fans postulate that this is the infamous Nova 6 contagion.

The official Call of Duty: Warzone blog also released a statement about this strange contaminant, claiming that it is 100% contained at the moment. It seems as though it came from Rebirth Island, but for what purpose it was released into Verdansk remains uncertain. This seems to make sense, though, as the currently irradiated areas include both the Prison and the Shipwreck areas of the map. These areas are marked with a large red circle and players would do well to stay far away from them during their games if possible.

When entering these areas, players will quickly be overcome by a dense green smoke. The player will then take repeated damage at an alarming rate until they manage to escape the irradiated zone or succumb to its horrors. A gas mask is capable of warding off this deadly effect for a brief time, but they only last so long. If the player’s gas mask breaks while they are deep within one of these irradiated zones, death is guaranteed. Unfortunately, death isn’t the end of it, as dying inside one of these zones causes the player to respawn into Verdansk as a zombie.

With this and the nuke event set to start on April 21st, there are definitely going to be some major overhauls to Call of Duty: Warzone. More information should come to light over the coming days, but until that time players should explore the area in game. For those brave enough to venture deep into the irradiated zones, there may be something unique worth finding.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
